Books aren’t Dead

When was the last time you read a good book? With the popularity of the Nook & Kindle, have people forgotten what it feels like to turn a page, or use a highlighter on their favorite sentence. Bookstores aren’t on every corner like Starbucks, but they do serve a purpose when utilized.

I paid a visit to the new concept store that Barnes & Noble opened in Scarsdale, NY. A smartly curated floor plan, with every genre you would expect. As consumers are getting excited for albums, I was glad to see a dedicated section with albums and CD’s.

Scouring this labyrinth of a store will work up an appetite. With a restaurant that has a combination indoor / outdoor space, this is the perfect place to grab a cup of “Joe” or wine and get lost in a book or two.

Thanks for reading, now it’s time you picked up a book.

Its nearing the end of February, Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and you’re waiting for winter to be over.  What that means, is that retail stores will have new Spring 14′ product hitting the stores soon.  The next best thing to that, is most major retail store have discount stores where you can load up on great deals.

Nordstrom Rack, where you can find shirts from HUGO BOSS and Tommy Hilfiger, to denim from True Religion and 7 for all Mankind.  With most Nordstrom Rack stores near a full price Nordstrom, when last season’s merchandise has used up its shelf life, they become bargains at its new home.  Tech and fashion collide as the Nordstrom Rack launched its new “Rack app”.  Now deal seekers can  find out when brands they love will be in their closest stores.  Don’t take my word for it, visit

If you haven’t visited a Neiman Marcus before, you need to.  Grand in stature, and brands that are the creme de la creme.  For the average “blue collar” guy, he may or may not feel like a “fish out of water”.  Enter, the “Last Call Store” where brands such as Versace, John Varvatos, and Burberry can be found for very reasonable prices.  A guy can visit this store, and find a few treasures that can elevate his style.  For great deals visit

Who hasn’t shopped at a Saks 5th Ave. before?  If you have, then you love great clothes. The “Off 5th” outlets don’t offer the same type of services as there main stores, but when you can buy clothes at 50-65% off, you sometimes overlook certain deficiencies.  Although each “Off 5th” that I’ve visited, has a good amount of store branded items, you can find brands such as Scotch & Soda, Goorin Bros., and Magnanni. For great deals visit

Whether you visit, any of these three stores or not, you know where you can find your best deals.  Looking your best while not breaking the bank, is the goal of many guys who try to emulate what their favorite actor, athlete, or influential person wears.  Don’t forget, that when you dress your best, you feel your best.

Where do you find your best menswear deals?

Fantastic 4 vs. The Avengers

You probably haven’t noticed, but around the holidays everyone has an extra pep in their step.  These guys are definitely in the holiday spirit, one group highlighted by the grey windowpane double breasted suit, and the second group highlighted by festive velvet blazers.  So which group takes home the award for best dressed, The Avengers or The Fantastic 4?

Belt or Braces

I like the look that these mannequins are wearing, but I was taught either belt or braces, not both.  What’s your take on this?

Denim & Supply by Ralph Lauren

As you have probably seen, many apparel companies are showing pieces with a “camouflage” theme to it.  Whether you want to feel patriotic and support the troops, or just feel comfortable and look cool take a look at this collection by Ralph Lauren.  Under the Ralph Lauren umbrella, “Denim & Supply” is a young and fresh line that screams “Americana” with some pieces, and can appeal to a wide variety of customers with its free spirit look of t-shirts, hoodies, and jeans.

Hard to fit?

For the average guy, buying clothes “off the rack” can be as easy as 1,2,3.  Now for everyone else, options include the “Big N Tall” stores or endless searches on the internet.

In the tailored clothing market, better brands offer made to measure.  That process can be as simple as your salesperson ordering your size, or a tailor taking specific measurements to make your personal pattern.  In the picture above, the half constructed jacket is called a “basted try-on”.  I call it the skeleton of a suit, or your schematic to making your suit jacket fit correctly.  If you’re a 38s or 44xl and can’t find clothes that fit, this might be the best investment you can make.

Better brands, such as Hickey Freeman, Kiton, Zegna, Brioni, all have skilled tailors that can get you started on the right path to looking your best.
