Groom Prep

Who gets ready at the last minute? Last Friday, a client of mine asks me to help a friend of his out of a jam. An hour later, I find out his friend is getting married on Saturday and forgets his shirt and bowtie back home in Virginia. Needless to say, I found the right fitting shirt and bowtie and he’s a happy camper.

And you thought all the groom had to do was show up! This situation reminded me of how I prepped for my day. Unless I woke up thinking I was Denzel, I couldn’t just roll out of bed and go get married. When your big day rolls around, be smart, and use a checklist. My list was not too complicated.

1. Pack your clothes early

2. Pack grooming products in Dopp kit

3. Get shirt pressed day of event

4. Make sure you have the rings

5. Your “best man” is your backup reminder

Say Yes to the Tux

What do you want to wear for your wedding? Looking back on my wedding day, all I could think about is how good a salesman I am. I convinced her to go out with me, she said “yes”, when I proposed, and now get hitched in front of God, family & friends.

If you haven’t seen the show “Say Yes to the Dress”, brides to be, try on an eternity of dresses and then scream out the shows tagline. I didn’t go that far. As we changed our venue from outdoors to indoors, I had an option of wearing a suit or tuxedo. With the amount of black tie events I would attend this year, I chose to rent rather than buy. I decided to visit The Black Tux in NYC to see what fabrics & options to choose from.

The Black Tux allows you to either enter your measurements on its website, or visit one of their fit specialists in showrooms. What I loved about this rental experience, was the a la carte way of ordering. My options ranged from the entire outfit, to the individual pieces, such as bow ties, shirts, stud sets. Since I only needed a tuxedo, I chose the navy peak lapel tuxedo, as I didn’t want to wear something traditional. When it’s time for your big day, whether you buy or rent, do your research, and enjoy the moment.

Books aren’t Dead

When was the last time you read a good book? With the popularity of the Nook & Kindle, have people forgotten what it feels like to turn a page, or use a highlighter on their favorite sentence. Bookstores aren’t on every corner like Starbucks, but they do serve a purpose when utilized.

I paid a visit to the new concept store that Barnes & Noble opened in Scarsdale, NY. A smartly curated floor plan, with every genre you would expect. As consumers are getting excited for albums, I was glad to see a dedicated section with albums and CD’s.

Scouring this labyrinth of a store will work up an appetite. With a restaurant that has a combination indoor / outdoor space, this is the perfect place to grab a cup of “Joe” or wine and get lost in a book or two.

Thanks for reading, now it’s time you picked up a book.

Take a Break

You deserve to “take a break”. Taking a page from Rihanna, it looks like all we do is work, work, work, work, work. When was the last time you recharged your battery? Making time to get away from it all is important, otherwise you will never achieve that “work/ life” balance you’ve always heard about.

Having a passport, was a great investment. It has allowed me to travel abroad, experience different cultures, dial down my senses, and walk slow in the morning. If you don’t take time for you, who else will? Maximize your days off, go to a park, museum, sporting event, even plan a vacation. You know how hard you work, and I know from experience, when you get back, the work will still be there. My only question to you is, “how do you want to take a break?”

Business trip – Travel right

For most guys, attending a business conference in sunny Orlando can be as exhilarating as hitting the lotto, and to others, a bout of anxiety as they try to pack the right clothing for another trip. What if I told you that, planning a business casual wardrobe isn’t as scary as it sounds.

As I a typically travel with “carry on” luggage,  packing for style and convenience can be simple. Don’t just throw items from your closet into your suitcase, and think that you will have enough clothes to wear. If your meetings don’t count on you wearing a suit, make sure you bring a sportcoat that can be worn with several different slacks. If you can pack grey, navy, black, or khaki trousers, and they work alongside your sportcoat, you’ve picked a winner.

Make life simple when traveling for work, bring solid color shirts that pair back to your sportcoat. This allows you to transition from meetings during the day, to dinner / after hour events. When it comes to your shoes, brown or black are your safest choices, you decide which you want to pack, and which you want to wear on the plane. This ensures that during your trip, you have options.

Don’t make what you wear on your business trip, overshadow why you are going. Have fun with your co-workers, learn how to be better at your business, and be confident in your wardrobe choices by keeping it simple.

What are your go to items when traveling, leave a comment below.

Passion for Fashion

HUGO BOSS, is a luxury fashion brand, from Metzingen, Germany, that has become a global name for aspirational style. When most people think of fashion, womenswear immediately comes to mind. However in the menswear field, there are many women who are the Hidden Figures behind many known brands. I sat down with Traci Hasley, a trailblazer for past, present, and future HUGO BOSS collections.

MST: What is your title at HUGO BOSS? What does your day to day look like?

TH: I am the Senior Buyer of Men’s Sportswear. Daily, I am managing and supporting my team. In addition, I work with my global counterparts on aligning the next assortment, provide product knowledge training, and shop the competition to ensure that we remain abreast of relevant and latest fashion trends.

MST: What opportunities have you had working at HUGO BOSS?

TH: People, Travel, and Ideas are 3 key things I have experienced. People challenge you, Travel opens up your eyes, and gives you a new perspective. That perspective generates Ideas and possibilities.

MST: What trends do you see men looking to try?

TH: We are definitely in a time of what I call “casual plus”. Clothing that can transition for many occasions has become the most valid motivation to shop, as opposed to buying for one specific event. Guys look for items that have multiple uses with a fashion flair, that isn’t too limiting.

MST: Do you wish more men would take risks with fashion?

TH: I do wish men would take more risks, even if it’s something as subtle as a new fit or color. There is a comfort level for most men, and finding that balance of product and fit is key. If you feel good in it, you will look good in it.

MST: What are three must have items for guys this season?

TH: An awesome leather jacket, denim that can be dressed up or down, as well as a “go to” soft tee that can layer or pair with anything.

MST: Where did you go to college? What did you study?

TH: I received my BAS in International Economics from American University in Washington DC.

MST: What inspired you to get into the fashion business?

TH: Believe it or not, it was my dad. I aspired to be an attorney, but after working at a law firm for a year while applying to law school, I realized it wasn’t for me. My dad told me to do what I love. In order to succeed in life, you have to have a passion for it. I ended up applying to Parsons in NYC, and began to pursue an advanced degree in Fashion Merchandising. The rest is history.

MST: Why did you choose menswear, over womenswear?

TH: While at Parsons, I had the opportunity to work several internships in both areas. Although womenswear was interesting, something clicked while I was at Armani with a Men’s Sportswear internship. In the end, menswear chose me, and I never looked back.

MST: Did you have a mentor growing up? Would you recommend others have a mentor?

TH: It may sound corny, but my mentor is my dad. He has a brilliant business mind. It’s been incredible to talk shop and bounce ideas off of him, especially when I am at a crossroads or may be considering something new. He also won’t tell me what I want to hear, but what I need to hear, which is key. I suggest that everyone finds that person you can trust with your physical and mental well-being. It allows you to truly stop and listen to your inner voice and take heed.

MST: If you saw your younger self walking down the street, what advice would you give that girl?

TH: If you believe in something, go after it. What is the worst thing that can happen? Someone says “No”? It just means, “No, not right now”.
